The ASPS is pleased to announce that the 6th edition of the World Forum Democracy, which will be held in Strasbourg from 8-10 November 2017, will focus on the role of political parties and media in the context of rising populism.

Bearing the title “Is Populism a Problem?” the Forum seeks to ask how pluralism, freedom of expression, and fair and evidence-based public debate can be safeguarded faced with the rise of populism across Europe. A growing disconnect between citizens and political elites and dramatic changes in the media ecosystem are challenging democracy as we know it. New political and media actors and practices are emerging, offering opportunities for direct, unmediated engagement of the public, unbound by ethical or institutional safeguards. How can we nourish a political culture which embraces a long-term perspective and resists the excesses of populism?

A special programme of events parallel to the Forum, including a visit to the European Court of Human Rights, will be organised for participants from the Schools.

More information can be found on the Forum’s website.
