The Summer University for Democracy organised by the Council of Europe for its network of Schools of Political Studies, will be followed this year by an international colloquy entitled “Transparency and public ethics” co-organised by the City and the Communauté Urbaine of Strasbourg, the University of Pau and the National Centre of Territorial Civil Service, and will be open to the public.

From 27 June to 1st July, Strasbourg will welcome numerous debates on the threats challenging democratic systems: how to reconcile citizens with politics? How to restore their confidence in their leaders? How to combat voter abstention? In what circumstances can education be an antidote against the deficit of ethics in politics? How to preserve the political, economic and mediatic sphere against corruption, the constant search for financial gain, greed? These questions which today lie at the core of democratic changes in various countries, will be addressed thanks to numerous European and International personalities.

Some thousand elected representatives and national and local civil servants, association leaders, media professionals, economic leaders... have answered positively to the invitation of the Council of Europe and the City of Strasbourg.

We hope that the interest raised by this week, will enable us in the future to make this project of World Forum for Democracy in Strasbourg - annual international meeting on contemporary challenges of Democracy - come true.
