Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence: the start of a new academic year 20/02/2012 The first seminar of the Annual Seminar Project was held from 8 to 11 December 2011 in Niš. The ninth generation included political parties’ representatives, media and business sectors as well as representatives of the non-governmental organisations and academic community. Interactivity and argumentative dialogue were the main characteristics of this first seminar.

Serbia’s perspectives in joining the EU and the wider context in which the integration of Serbia takes place were some of the discussed topics. Participants also had an opportunity to discuss with the representatives of the executive branch about the public administration reforms, achieved results and challenges still necessary to overcome, as well as the importance and functioning of the Office of the Ombudsperson and Commissioner for Equality. Debates also focused on the current situation and challenges to the media in Serbia, underlining its importance for the public opinion and its capability to influence the EU integration debates.

Topics that were of a great interest to the participants were related to the activities of the Union of Waste Collectors, to the sustainable development and future of the Serbian economics in that area, energy management, correlation between innovations and energy, the global climate changes and the necessity to use sustainable energy sources. The movie “The Inconvenient Truth” confirmed the severity of the global climate changes problem with scientific analysis and many practical examples.
