“How to catch them - Encouraging political participation of young people” 03/04/2012 With the support of British Council Croatia, the Academy for Political Development organised, on 27 February 2012, a round table on the participation of youth in politics. The guest lecturer was Mr Alex Sergent, Director of “Catch 21”, a British charitable production company which produces videos and other new media content to help engage young people in politics and their communities in Great Britain.

The round table gathered Mr. Arsen Bauk, Minister of Public Administration, Ms Marija Lugarić, Deputy Minister of Science, Education and Sports, Mr Duje Prkut from the NGO "GONG" and Ms Emina Bužinkić, former President of the Croatian Youth Network.

During the discussion, which was delivered before VERN’s students, alumni of the Academy for Political Development and the media, it was emphasised that the political passivity of youth is far from being Croatia’s concern. This trend could be improved through using suitable programs which already exist but need to be restructured. According to the estimates cited by Ms Emina Bužinkić, less than 1% of the Croatian Parliament is made up of « young” parliamentarians. Furthermore, youth that vote in elections represent less than 13 % of the population. It has also been underlined that not all the Croatian youth are progressive and that recent studies show nationalistic tendencies, or homophobes, amongst young people.
