Refugee Academy : Third Pilot Seminar

Third Pilot Seminar of the project “Setting-up a Council of Europe Academy for Democratic Leadership for Persons with a Refugee Background” in Rovereto, Italy.

The Council of Europe, in partnership with the City of Strasbourg, the City of Rovereto and the Association of Schools of Political Studies organised a seminar "Pathways Towards Sustainable Integration: Fostering Refugees’ Education for Democratic Citizenship” on 3-4 October 2019 in Rovereto, Italy.

This seminar is part of a project called "Academy for Democratic Leadership for Persons with a Refugee Background’" initiated by the Council of Europe in 2018. Among the themes that were discussed during the Seminar were the roles and responsibilities of main stakeholders, developing curricula for refugee education for democratic citizenship and the impact of refugees' initiatives and their involvement in decision-making.

The seminar brought together approximately 30 participants, including individuals with a refugee background and actors representing organisations working with migrants in the public and private sectors in Italy and elsewhere.
Mr Francesco Valduga, Mayor of Rovereto opened the seminar with Mr Michael Remmert, Head of the Education Policy Division at the Council of Europe.

Different experts spoke during the panel on Refugees’ Education, Integration and Democratic Citizenship such as Claudia Köhler, researcher at the University of Bamberg, Gelly Aroni, Head of the Department for the Coordination and Monitoring of Refugee Education of the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs and Melis Ari from the Transatlantic Migrant Democracy Dialogue.
