ASPS PRESIDENT CALLS FOR RESTORATION OF DEMOCRATIC CONSTITUTIONAL ORDER IN TUNISIA

Strasbourg, 02.08.2021

Nils Muižnieks, President of the Association of Schools of Political Studies of the Council of Europe (ASPS), today called on Tunisian President Kais Saied to respect both the letter and the spirit of his country’s constitution and reestablish the proper functioning of democratic institutions and the rule of law.

Recognising the serious economic, political and health problems facing Tunisia, Mr Muižnieks said these could only be resolved satisfactorily on the basis of the democratic principles, freedoms and rights which the Tunisian people had gained through their uprising in 2011.

The former Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights (2012 - 2018) urged Tunisia to respect its obligations under international human rights law and avoid any action that could lead to violence.

The ASPS which groups democracy academies from Europe and North Africa, including Tunisia, promotes education in human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
